Requirements and Deadlines
At All Times
Enroll for 12 credits every semester until you have 72 credits
Have a GPA of 3.3 or better
Have successfully completed 66% of credits attempted while at NYU
Semester 1
Take proseminar
Semester 2
Have completed 12 credits by course completion date (beginning of sixth week for a spring semester)
Take proseminar (students entering 2007 and after only)
Semester 3
Have completed 20 credits by course completion date (first day of term for a fall semester)
Semester 4
Have completed 32 credits by course completion date (beginning of sixth week for a spring semester)
From this point on your cumulative average grade should be an A−
Semester 5
Submit third year review papers on first day of term
Have completed 44 (40 for students entering before 2007) credits by course completion date (first day of term for a fall semester)
Arrange thesis prospectus advisor
Successfully complete third year review by end of semester
Semester 6
Have satisfied the distribution requirements (see below) by course completion date (sixth week for a spring semester)
Find two prospectus committee members
Submit prospectus by end of tenth week
Defend prospectus by end of semester
Semester 7
Defend thesis prospectus successfully by end of semester

Distribution Requirements

Logic: a course in meta-logic (covering at least completeness for predicate logic) or an approved alternative (such as G83.1003,
Logic for Philosophy
). - One course in value theory (ethics, aesthetics, philosophy of law, or political philosophy), one course in metaphysics/epistemology (construed broadly so as to include philosophy of language and philosophy of mind), and for students entering in 2005 or later, one course in the history of philosophy (ancient, medieval, modern, or nineteenth century). At least three courses outside value theory. No more than two Background courses (i.e. Advanced Introductions) or undergraduate courses (which in any case require permission from the DGS).

- A minimum of 7 of the 11 (for pre-2007 students, 7 of the 10) required courses must be taken in the NYU Philosophy Department.
